No one really anticipates a burst pipe, especially in Sydney where snowfall is virtually non-existent and winters aren’t cold enough to cause frozen pipes. As cold is one of the most common reasons for burst pipes, everyone assumes the plumbing pipes in their system won’t burst. Unfortunately, that assumption is wrong and there are several other reasons why pipes burst in Sydney. At SPS Plumbing, we have the skill and the equipment to conduct all kinds of burst pipe repairs. If you spot the signs of a burst pipe, call us immediately.

Causes of Burst Pipes
Pipes usually burst because of build-up of pressure in the system. In cold regions, this is because ice can form a block within the pipe and doesn’t allow water to pass and lead to build-up of pressure. However, this can also be caused due to the reasons listed below:
- Bad blockages – If you leave a drainage clog unattended for long, it can grow and worsen over time. That leads to a severe blockage that leaves no room for the water to pass. This can cause a build-up of pressure and lead to burst pipes.
- Tree roots – Roots can grow thick and dense inside the drainage pipe because there’s plenty of nutrition, water, and oxygen available to them here. If this problem isn’t addressed quickly, the pressure can build up behind this wall of roots in the sewer and that’ll lead to a burst pipe.
- Deterioration – Pipes do deteriorate overtime and can become very weak. Sometimes, even normal mains pressure can cause them to burst. The only way to avoid this situation and the problems associated with a burst pipe, we recommend that you replace a deteriorating pipeline immediately.
Signs of a Burst Pipe
Pipe bursts above the ground are easily detectable. You’ll see visible proof of it on your walls or floors. But what if an underground pipe bursts? How do you spot a problem if the pipe is underground? Here are some common signs of a burst pipe both above and below the ground.
- Water and flooding
- Soggy and damp ground or sink holes in the backyards or gardens
- Water damage on the drywalls and flooring
- Low water pressure or slow drainage
- Unusually high water bills
How Do We Handle the Situation?
The first step is to locate the burst pipe and we do this by examining the symptoms. We will look at areas with the highest amount of water damage and start from there. After we have located the damaged pipe, we will:
- Inspect the damage and determine if it can be fixed without replacement.
- If it can’t be fixed, we will cut out the damaged section of the pipe, clear any clogs, and replace it with a fresh pipe.
