How Serious is A Dripping Faucet?
If your tap keeps dripping, you may be wondering if a repair is urgent. It's important to remember that this problem can signal a bigger issue.
If left alone, it can also mean major water damage, and a spike in water bills. This is why it's critical to take fast action as soon as you suspect you have a problem.
Common Causes of Tap Leaks
When it comes to tap leaks, there are various reasons that can be behind this. Knowing the real issue you have on your hands will help you fix the dripping tap accordingly.
See some of these below:
- Poor Installation and Sizing: When components aren't installed correctly, or are the wrong size.
- Wear and Tear: Components that have worn out over time. For example a worn out O-ring, this causes the tap to leak from the spindle.
- Damage: A component is broken (e.g. because of little to no tap care, or mishandling.)
Your Steps to a Smooth DIY Tap Repair
A tap repair doesn't have to be complicated. See our comprehensive guide to this below. We'll detail everything—from what you need to each step involved.
Tools and Supplies Needed
Before beginning the repair, it's important to make sure you have the right equipment. See what you need below:
- Adjustable Wrench or Spanner
- Screwdrivers
- Jumper Valves and O-rings
- Cloth and Pliers
Step 1: Prepare the Area
Once you have all your tools and equipment, get your space ready. Locate your main water supply (usually found in the front yard) and turn off the water meter.
Next, turn on your tap to drain the rest of the water out, with your water meter off. As an optional precaution, turn on a lower level tap as well. This prevents any water-related problems from happening.
Step 2: Take Apart the Tap
Remove the decorative cap on the tap handle, then unscrew the handle itself using your screwdriver or wrench. Take off the tap cover (or skirt) to expose the internal components. You should see the washer and the O-ring.
Step 3: Find the Issue
Once you've located these components, inspect these for any wear and tear or leaks. A dripping tap washer usually means that the washer is old and needs replacing. If the tap is leaking around the spindle, the O-ring may need replacement.
Step 4: Replace the Components
Remove the old washer by loosening the jumper valve it's attached to. If the O-ring is damaged, carefully cut it off and roll a new one, or take it off using care.
Step 5: Put the Tap Back Together
Take the time to ensure that the tap is completely clean, by wiping it down with a damp cloth. Then using a wrench or spanner, follow the steps below:
- Align the new O-ring with the groove on the spindle
- Place the spindle into the centre of the tap mechanism
- At the end of the spindle, install the jumper valve replacement
- Position the body washer correctly at the base of the tap
- Reassemble the tap handle and cover
Step 6: Test Your Work
When the components have been secured on, try turning your water meter back on and gently turn on the tap. Observe the water flow and take note if there are any more leaks present.
How Can I Prevent Tap Leaks?
Like the rest of your plumbing, taps need to be cared for. Avoid banging or twisting your taps too harshly which can damage your components and cause leaks. For areas with hard water, you may also need to descale your taps frequently.
It's also recommended that you inspect your taps every few months. Look out for signs like rusting, small dripping, or low water pressure. Use a silicone lubricant to the joints of the moving parts when your tapware is experiencing stiffness. This will help you catch any issues early on and keep the taps working smoothly.
By practising this care, you can prevent similar issues with your taps in the future.
